Session 2: The Purge

Is this Program more than simply cleaning out my workspace?
ANSWER: Yes, the good news is that there are cleaning services that are a lot less costly than this Program. The bad news is that you can expect to be re-hiring them on a regular basis for the rest of your life. THE HEART OF THIS PROGRAM IS HABIT AND PATTERN ALTERATION.

Do I need to purge out the drawer that has all of my office supplies in it?
ANSWER: If all your supplies are organized and easily accessible, then there is no need for you to purge this particular drawer. However, if this has become your ‘junk drawer’ then, yes, it most definitely needs to be purged.

Why is it best that I keep my scissors, stapler etc. off of the top of my desk?
ANSWER: To keep your ‘180’ clear thereby enhancing your ability to maintain your focus.

What do I do if there is no place for archival storage?
ANSWER: Be creative! Seek out alternative space in your office environment. Speak to your immediate supervisor to initiate a viable solution. Keep in mind that some archival material may be eliminated as ‘trash’, ‘give-away’ or ‘give back’ during the purge process.

What should I do with files that belong to a previous office occupant?
ANSWER: These files should be immediately purged. The operative term is “immediately”. You would have no idea what is in these files. The purging process will definitely shorten your learning curve.

What do I do with all my business cards I have collected?
ANSWER: Lying in a drawer will be of zero value. The initial step is the purging and then re-organizing (re-grouping) what remains in categories that provide ‘Instant Retrievability’ for you. The Program will provide the habit of immediately placing a newly received business card into its proper category, taking only mere seconds per card to maintain this system. NOTE: A business card collected for the sake of marketing/contacting a potential client and then having this card be destined to reside in a drawer is a sacrilege to your client development and business growth.

How do I determine what to throw away or keep?
ANSWER: By utilizing the systematic and proven process of ‘The Purge’, you will find every item in your world ends up in one of the initial four categories – ‘Give away/Give back’, ‘Archive’, ‘Trash’ or ‘Keep’.

Where do I put my keep items after the purge?
ANSWER: The general answer is in its most easily retrievable place. The more specific answer is once the purge is completed you will find it to be a joy to determine where to place your items with all of the newly created available space.

What! No baskets? No trays? No standing file folders?
ANSWERS: Correct, except for the Out Tray which remains. This may seem absurd, but this is only because they have existed in your workspace without ever being questioned. This catch-all collects information that is outdated, archival, need-to-be-filed, avoided, unread material and downright trash. With the elimination of your baskets, trays and standing file folders the completion of the Purge and the implementation of the Seven Terminals, you will see how information to you and from you flows with ease.

What is the definition of ‘Archives’?
ANSWER: Information that is of no practical value at this time and may never be, however it might be needed at some future time for documentation or governmental purposes.
